Who is SKYROCKET

For more than 20 years, Michele Stowe has built a career around her passion: leadership training and development. Through her executive coaching and consulting company, SkyRocket LLC, Michele helps teams, leaders, and organizations create and experience authentic change that empowers them to produce significant and sustainable professional results. Michele, certified by the International Coaching Federation, also is a licensed Hogan Assessment practitioner. Michele was born in the U.S. and raised in Germany. After earning Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and German at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University, she returned to Germany to work for many years. She held executive positions at Fortune 100 companies for almost two decades, in industries ranging from real estate to pharmaceuticals, and, before starting SkyRocket in 2016 served as Chief Operating Officer of Mercy Housing, one of the nation’s largest affordable housing organizations. In that role she managed 140 employees in areas ranging from strategic planning to philanthropy, human resources, information technology, and marketing.

I’m often asked, “Is that a quilt on your wall?”

Why yes, yes it is. And it’s a pretty special quilt.

That’s because Great Aunt Totsie was one of a kind. I grew up hearing lots of words used to describe her. Independent. Fierce. Smart. Tough. Loving.
And my favorite: Spinster. Because an unmarried woman with no kids had to be labeled as flawed somehow.

To me, she was an inspiration. Great Aunt Totsie used to hang a flag outside her home that had a martini glass on it. That flag meant that the “Chemistry Club” was meeting and anyone was welcome to come in for a martini. I can only imagine the dramatic whispers she sparked every week when the flag went up. She worked in a garment factory that produced men’s neckties and cummerbunds. Remnants from the factory came home with her – with or without permission from management – and she crafted them into this lovely piece of art. This quilt hangs in my office as a reminder of how she lived her life: if you are going to do something, do it well and make it beautiful; march to the beat of your own drummer; and remember to take the time to enjoy life, little pleasures and good company.

Her experiences stoked a professional philosophy that caught fire at Mercy Housing. She created a comprehensive talent management program for the organization that structured everything – from onboarding to leadership and team management, and onwards to succession planning – around the organization’s core values.
